Description |
Basket with lid. Plaited cedar bark bottom; outer edge of sweetgrass stitching on bottom; natural and colored beargrass wrapped twined are the weft for wall with strip of cedar bark used for rim. Extended Visual Description Small Makah circular basket with lid. Bottom of basket has a square of woven bark at center, serving as an anchor around which a circular bottom of relatively thick grass was constructed. The sides are woven much more finely than the bottom. There is a single row/band of dark brown near the bottom, three rows of dark brown near the center (with a single row of the lighter main material between each band), and a third band/row of dark material just under where the lid sits. There is a cedar band above the fine weaving for the lid to sit on. The lid is also finely woven. There are two circles of decoration on the lid. The outer circle consists of three dark bands/rows, each separated by a single row of lighter material. The inner circle consists of two bands of dark material with a light row of material in between them. The weaving of the lid spirals outward from the center. |
