Description |
Small trinket basket. Wrapped and twined basket with lid. Has a twilled cedar bark bottom construction. Uses colored and natural beargrass for weft. Sweetgrass is used on bottom of basket for stitching. The design has two animal figures facing right. Extended Visual Description Small Makah circular basket with lid and dog(?) motif. Bottom of basket has a square of woven bark at center, serving as an anchor around which a circular bottom of relatively thick grass was constructed. The sides are woven much more finely than the bottom. Near the bottom of the basket is a double row of purple material which serves as the ground for the dogs. The dogs have long bodies, 2 ears, and a snout. There are two complete dog figures on the basket. There also appears to be the beginnings of a third dog figure which was partially completed (legs and part of a tail), but abandoned. The basket contacts by two or three rows just below the bark rim on which the lid would rest. The lid moves upward and the center is a knob that one might grab. The lid has a double row of purple at the bottom edge of the rim. There is a pink motif on the top of the lid and the entire knob is pink. There is a single row of pink in a circle around the knob and little waves of pink at the base of the knob. The underside of the lid reveals that the exterior is very faded. The interior colors are a deep vibrant purple and an almost magenta red/pink. |
