Description |
Tlingit basket with lid. Very small spruce root is used for close together work. A single unpolished weft strand passes over-under each alternate warp splint between the lines of regular twined weaving. This type of weave is economical in that a second grade of root may be used. Also the type of weave lacks strength. The weft weave that makes a thirteen eye pattern around the basket is a larger spruce root woven in with the smaller size spruce root. The same for the two straight lines around the basket. The lid is made of the same type of weave as the basket, except for the lid top or handle. Woven into the lid handle are tiny stones gotten from a birds gizzard. The crudest method used to finish the edge. Splints are cut off even with the edge of the basket. The very old weavers use this method. Also used for the tourist trade. The design is made by false embroidery. Extended Visual Description Small round basket with lid. There are two rows of embossed designs, one at the top, one at the bottom. Both are rows of diamonds, the ones near the bottom are smaller than those near the top. Between the rows of diamonds is a row of geometric designs in brown - alternating diamonds with stretched out diamond shapes made of short horizontal lines. In the middle of the top row of diamonds is a brown design of short brown lines alternating up and down. The lid has a raised center and two bands of design. One band of design is on the non-raised part of the lid and echoes the center brown design of the basket. The second design is around the raised part of the lid and is of interlocking brown triangles. There is material inside the raised part of the lid which makes a rattling noise when shook. |
