Description |
Small basket with carrying handle. Made with fine wrapped twinning and split cedar warps. A "virtuoso" piece with an unusual shape. It has a braided handle with a beargrass striped design. Extended Visual Description Makah basketry piece with a braided handle. It is narrow (7.5 cm) at the bottom and widens to 17 cm at the top of the basket. The base is of wider bark and the bottom portion is less finely woven than the upper portions. There are four bands of decoration: one between the less fine and more finely woven parts consisting of deep purple with some green highlights, the next two (about equidistant on the body of the bag) consist of two rows of yellow with two rows of purple on either side of it, the top band is immediately below the rim and is a single row of green. The handle once had a strand of green braided in it, but the green is now significantly faded. This object might be used nowadays as a purse. |
