Description |
Tlingit Basket. Many possible uses: storage, cooking, drinking, and berry basket. This basket is water tight. Spruce root is used. This type of weave is the most common. There are five rows of reddish spruce root that faded. The splints were cut off even with the basket top or edge of basket. This method was used by old weavers and for the modern tourist trade. This is a standard bottom. The single unpolished weft strand passes over and under each alternate warp splint between the lines of regular twined weaving. instead of the bottom lying flat it goes inward and the coarseness is on the inside. The design is false embroidery. The pattern is widely used. Extended Visual Description Round based basket. Basket seems relatively tall for base diameter. There are two main wide bands of decoration: Black long rectangles with a tan cross through the center (top and bottom of cross go over black of rectangle), and orange color in the four quadrants created by the cross. There are also some bands of very faded color (red? orange?) above and below the bands of black rectangles. The rim is reinforced with a piece of bark (?) adhered to the inside of the rim. There is also a small piece of this bark(?) reinforcement at the interior bottom at the edge. |
