Description |
Sangi (large backpack), Bontoc. This large and sturdy backpack, plaited with rattan, would have been used on an everyday basis to bring food and supplies out to the rice terraces. It would be used as to carry clothing and person effects on longer journeys. Extended Visual Description The lid is all one part made of woven reeds. The rim of the lid is thicker then the body because it has two layers of reeds. The ends of the reds are broken off between one and two weaves from the rim all the way around the lid. The lid is dark brown with reddish sheen. There is general overall residue between the reeds. The top outer corners of the lid are reenforced by reeds spreading across the weave twisting around another reed and rendering the weave. The weave of the body of the basket and lid is a one over two pattern. The body of the basket has overall wear of abrasion, residue and concave areas. The front body of the basket as overall concave areas that are visible. About 32 cm up the basket is a braided band used as a ledge for the lid. the braids are woven in a circular pattern. This braided band extends down the sides of the basket and into the base, it does not extend to the back of the basket. The band is woven into the body of the basket and is reenforced at the turning points of the band, 30cm up the sides. Also, there is a circular ring in the middle front of the basket that extends through the band at two points. This ring is the connection point of the backstraps. This basket has many loops all of which are made of reed wrapped in reed. There is one at the front middle base of the basket and two on either side of the basket about half way up along the band. Located at the reinforcements along the band, 30cm up the sides is a large handle that extends from on side of the basket to the other. the handle is roughly 64cm and braided in a small circular pattern. The connection points are the reeds of the braided handle lopped through the reinforcements of the braided band that then proceed back into the weave of the braided handle. The square base is one solid piece of bamboo that has been curved into the square base form. About every 5.5cm is a connection point were reed has been stitched through the bamboo. The front right corner of the base is completely broken. The front of the base were the bamboo overlap is wrapped in reed to hold the piece together. There are two points of the base that are wrapped in reed. The first and most predominate is wrapped 10 times. the second smaller area 7cm to the right of the first is wrapped 3 times in reed. At both spots the reed is tied once in the front. The bottom of the basket has a large support beam made of wood. The beam is connected by 4 holes two on either end in which reed has been stitched through similar to that of a button. The sides of the base of the underside have been lined with a bamboo rod. The rod is one piece that has been manipulated to fit into the space and extend entirely around the base. The rod is then wrapped in reed that is stitched through the base and body of the basket. There is another reed used for support, this reed ties penetrates the base and body, extends 6cm and repeats the process until it reaches all the way around the base. The straps of the basket start wide at the top and extend to narrow by the base. The wide part of the straps are two flat braids on top and two on bottom that are the woven together on the sides. The straps extend to the narrow section which is round circular pattern of braids. The connection point at the base of the basket the reed extends from the basket around the loop and renders the weave of the strap. The left connection point the braid splits into two breads creating a loop tat wrapped around the connection point. The right connection point the strap looks like it come unwoven and was repaired by creating a small braid from the broken parts, and the rest of the broken parts were wrapped into a bundle. The front connection points of the straps the braided strap spilt into to parts creating a loop and then wrap around the connection point and back into the braided single band. The loop of the straps and then wrapped in reed. The inside of the basket has a smokey smell and an ashy brown residue. There also appears to be remains of wood in the basket. |
